Experts Discuss Employment in Tokyo at Second Meeting
On July 18, Governor Koike joined the expert panel on employment in Tokyo, as they convened for this fiscal year’s second meeting.
"With the climate crisis, population decline, an aging society, and U.S. tariffs, we have mounting uncertainties ahead. Tokyo stands at the forefront of addressing complex social challenges. I often hear various sectors voicing labor shortages as a pressing concern. We need a comprehensive view of the current employment landscape and explore how to make the most of our human resources to tackle the issues in Tokyo. Today's agenda is diverse working styles. The trend toward flexible work arrangements, such as side jobs, part-time work, and gig work, allows people to choose a work style that fits their circumstances. These trends not only expand opportunities for people to thrive but also enable companies to tap into a broader pool of specialized talent to address labor shortages,” she noted.
The governor continued, “Digitalization is also one of the core parts of the current major trend. Using digital technology to improve productivity and increase free time is one option. We need to consider talent acquisition and development that align with the digital era.”
She concluded, “Tackling labor shortages requires diverse perspectives and ideas. As I often say, it’s vital to leverage women's potential. We aim to extend women's empowerment beyond Tokyo and across Japan. We are committed to pursuing and realizing a Tokyo where people shine. I look forward to hearing your candid opinions and various expert analyses."
