Governor Koike Attends the ‘TOKYO FLOWER CARPET 2025’ Show
Governor Koike attended the “TOKYO FLOWER CARPET 2025” show on April 19 at the Gyoko-dori Avenue outside the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. The street art event, organized by the Hanae Cultural Association, was held in the presence of Princess Tomohito of Mikasa.
“The work of hanae (floral art), which has been created with great care using petals of a variety of colors, is turning the landscape of this Gyoko-dori Avenue here into a spectacular show,” Governor Koike said. “I am fascinated every time I encounter this kind of art that brilliantly renders such a fleeting beauty through the ephemeral life of flowers.”
She noted that the theme of this year’s flower carpet is the art of ukiyo-e prints and paintings, which dates from the Edo period (1603-1868) and enjoys renewed popularity at present. “Edo culture attracts a lot of attention around the world, and it is extremely wonderful to express ukiyo-e with hanae,” the governor said. “Kabuki paintings are indeed a sophisticated and glamorous form of Tokyo’s hospitality.”
“Tokyo is preparing to host the World Athletics Championships in September and the Deaflympics in November,” she said. “We will seize these opportunities to let the world feel the diverse charm woven from the beauty of sports and Tokyo’s unique blend of ‘tradition’ and ‘innovation.’”
